Why dental hygiene is important for all
Gum disease is the leading reason for tooth loss. The majority of adults will have some inflammation in their gums at some point in their lives.
Gum health is so important to the health of our teeth and there is also links to general health too.
Professional and friendly dental hygienists
At Hope Park we focus on gum health. Our dentists and dental hygienists work together to create a personalised plan to improve and maintain your gum health.
This is achieved by visits with our talented and friendly hygienists for dental cleaning treatment and they will teach and motivate you how to look after your gums at home in between visits with the use of interdental cleaning, which is equally as important to maintaining healthy gums.
Dental Hygiene FAQS
What exactly does a dental hygienist do?
The role of a dental hygienist is to help you maintain healthy gums and to give your teeth an intensive clean. They will also show you how to take care of your teeth at home.
A dental hygiene appointment will remove any stubborn tartar and plaque and improve the health of your gums. Not taking care of your gums can lead to gum disease and the loss of teeth.
How often do you need to see a hygienist?
Your dentist will advise how often seeing a hygienist would be beneficial. Usually 6 monthly appointments but depending on gum health this could be more regularly.
Are there any signs or symptoms that you need to see a hygienist?
You might notice that your gums are bleeding when you brush your teeth or you have bad breath, these can be signs of gum disease. Attending regular 6 monthly check-ups with your dentist will highlight any issues you may be having with your gums.
Can a dental hygienist make my teeth look whiter?
A professional clean by a dental hygienist can remove some marks and stains made by food, drink and smoking. Your mouth will feel healthier and appear brighter.
For whiter teeth, we also offer a teeth whitening service.
Do you need to see a dental hygienist and a dentist?
Yes. Both offer a different service.
A dentist will check the health of your teeth and gums and repair any problems they find. A dental hygienist will clean your teeth and gums and help you maintain great dental health.
Does seeing a dental hygienist hurt?
In most cases, it will not hurt. If you haven’t had your teeth professionally cleaned for some time and have a build-up of tartar and plaque, it may be a little uncomfortable while they clean your teeth. Your hygienist will be attentive and you will always be able to let her know how you are feeling and take breaks if you need. You will find that if you brush and floss your teeth regularly and visit your hygienist as recommended, it will be a quick and painless appointment.
Should I bother seeing my dental hygienist during COVID-19 restrictions?
If your dental practice is open, then please do not put off your appointment unless you are showing signs of COVID-19 and are in isolation. Extra precautions are being taken by dental practices to keep both you and their staff safe from COVID-19.
